Approximately 30 people joined co-leader Phil Silas and me for the annual
Northern Virginia Bird Club's American Woodcock walk at Huntley Meadows. At
least 5 birds displayed tonight, but only a few people were able to see
birds peenting on the ground. Everyone was able to see silhouette birds
arriving to begin the peenting portion of the display. However, display
flights seemed truncated and at low altitude. We could hear the wing-whirl
but could not see any birds doing a display flight. We also had a Barred
Owl vocalize as dusk settled.
As a secondary prize, we got wonderful views of Venus. Bright and shiny.
The Northern Virginia Bird President Larry Meade pointed out Orion and asked
us to concentrate on the belt. A "waist of space" Larry opined. Most of
the group felt that it was funny and rated it a three-star pun.
Birds seen and heard tonight listed below.
