Dear Fellow Birders,
Fairfax Audubon Society has been selected as a lead chapter, nationally, in the
Audubon At Home initiative. The fundamental goal is to stimulate creation of
healthier habitats for homes and communities. As a kickoff for this program,
we would like to offer a tour of backyard (or front) gardens that utilize
native plants, conserve water, don't rely on pesticides and herbicides--in
short, are healthy habitats for humans and wildlife.
I'm hoping that, being avid birders, some of you are also gardeners who create
sanctuary for yourself and your feathered friends. If so, I would like to hear
from you.
Do you live in Northern Virginia?
Do you garden without herbicides, pesticides and excessive fertilizers?
Do you use mostly native plants?
Do you compost?
Would you be willing to open your garden to tour participants? (sometime
in late July, date to be determined)
Would you be willing to spend the day talking with folks about your
habitat? (your gardening practices, your plants, what wildlife you attract)
Would there be adequate parking in your neighborhood for small groups of
visitors?
If you can answer "yes" to these questions and this event appeals to you,
please reply to me at carol_inawren@xxxxxxx.
If you have had success with "healthy" gardening, but would prefer not to have
your garden open to the public, but would consider letting FAS describe and
photograph it for our publication, I'd be happy to hear from you in that regard
also.
Thanks for your consideration,
Carol Hadlock
