I have Red-shouldered Hawks that nest in the woods behind my apartment. I heard
and saw one of them flying around over my backyard. Later, it seemed to be on
or near the ground right at the edge of my yard. When I went to look a Blue Jay
flew down for a second, then went up, and I watched it make the most convincing
Red-shouldered Hawk sounds I have ever heard - exactly like the hawk I've seen
and heard the past few days.
I also saw a butterfly in my neighbor's yard this afternoon. It was rather
large, jagged trailing edges on the wings, and orange with black spots. It flew
away in a matter of seconds. Was this a Comma or Question Mark, or some other
species? Thoughts? This is the earliest I recall seeing a butterfly that wasn't
a Cabbage White or a Sulfur.
