I looked around Lynnhaven Inlet, First Landing State Park, and 85th through
89th Streets in Virginia Beach this morning.
Best birds at First Landing State Park was a Brown Creeper and a Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher. No unusual birds, but lots of Pine Warblers singing. I also
heard several Hermit Thrushes singing, which reminded me how beautiful they
sound.
The most unexpected birds I saw were on the beach near 88th Street (just
south of the eastern entrance to Fort Story) -- a pair of Piping Plovers!
Unfortunately, I only had a few seconds to view them because the pedistrian
traffic on the beach caused the plovers to fly up the beach, north. I hope
that the plovers find somewhere to settle down nearby, but this is doubtful
with all the people. There are still plenty of Red-throated Loons and
Northern Gannets in the ocean.
Lynnhaven Inlet has a pair of Osprey working on a nest on one of the pilings
just outside of the inlet's mouth. I saw a few Common Loons here, including
a distant bird in breeding plumage. A few Red-breasted Mergansers and
Bufflehead were present as well. I also watched some Boat-tailed Grackles
move about the boat launch parking lot.
