Greetings...
The two American White Pelicans found by Fred Atwood were tucked close to the
Maryland shore from before noon until around one-thirty today, seen from the
end of the road through Belle Haven Marina. At one-thirty, a small boat
(Zodiac type) motored directly toward them. I tried to see the identity of
the person on the boat, and it wasn't anyone I know (thus no ability to
compensate them for their effort...).
The birds flushed, flying low over the water for a short distance, before
gaining altitude and flying in lazy circles for a bit. They then continued
west, gaining a bit of altitude until they were seen north of me, and west of
the white building over at Jones Point. They weren't in Virginia long before
they drifted back to the middle of the river, and started pumping north.
They flew across the Wilson Bridge, and eventually put down on what seemed to
be the eastern shore, not far north of the bridge. I made no effort to
locate them again.
I was starting to worry about this species this year.
Cheers,
Todd
