All,
I went seeking Fred Atwood's White Pelicans this morning around 11:15.
I started searching the Potomac from the picnic area but was
unsuccessful so I walked out to the end of the marina parking lot. I
found the pelicans all the way across the river near where the new
marina is being built. Solidly in MD and not a very good look. I
decided to wait a bit and I was not disappointed. They took off and
began flying slow lazy circles over Indian Head highway. I watched them
through my scope thinking "Hey pelicans, Virginia is nice. We have good
fish. Hey, Virginia is for lovers. You look like a nice couple. How
about coming this way." They kept flying around getting nearer to the
Woodrow Wilson Bridge, at one point coming tauntingly close to Jones
Point before heading back. I had just about given up when suddenly the
lead pelican turned around and started heading straight for Virginia.
Past the house on Jones Point, past the marsh, they flew until I could
see the Hunting Towers apartment buildings in the background. Solidly
in Virginia! One touched down but the lead pelican did not, so the
other took off again and followed the leader back into Maryland and they
both landed essentially where they took off from.
