The latest arrival to my patch was a beautiful white-eyed vireo, which in
fact seemed to have a dark eye (first-year bird?). At my feeder, I noticed
two house finches exhibit crusty eyes, the first time I've seen evidence of
the finch plague. A late afternoon paddle in Little Hunting Creek with two
four-year-olds and another dad turned up my first martin of the year, at
least 2 rusty blackbirds, a Caspian tern, a handful of killdeer and greater
yellow-legs, an unidentified flyby shorebird (snipe?), at least 30 wood
ducks, osprey, a sharpie, a probable Cooper's, a red-shouldered, 1 or more
kingfishers, a singing thrasher, and at least two male mallard X black duck
hybrids.
