Finally got out to the Hike/Bike Trail for the first time in over a month on
Sunday before the snow came. It was very cold. The central wetland was
frozen except for an area the size of my living room that was jammed with
over 100 ducks. Most were GW TEAL, but there were about 10 each of mallard,
pintail, and shoveler, and one WIGEON. In addition to about 250 of the
usual sparrows, I saw one TREE SPARROW and a female YELLOWTHROAT (both in
the central wetland). Also saw what is probably the largest concentration
of flickers I have seen at Huntley, about 40 in a loose foraging flock at
the margin of the woods and the wetland east of the platform. Other than
that, typical winter birds and numbers. Most interesting:
5 GC kinglet
1 yellow-rump
1 winter wren
1 hermit thrush
3 creepers
