When I arrived at 8:48am Saturday, the hummingbird was hovering in mid-air,
often over the walkway, flying a few feet, hovering for a couple of seconds,
flying a few feet in another direction, hovering, and repeating, for perhaps
a minute before perching on a branch. Then it repeated the procedure a few
more times. I wondered if it was being fooled by the very lightly falling
snow into thinking the snowflakes were food.
She seemed quite unconcerned with my presence. One of her hovering spots
was over the walkway at eye level, no more than four feet away from me. I
was thrilled. But she moved on in just a couple of seconds.
After five minutes, I left. During my visit she briefly drank from the
heated feeder just once.
