Hello,
I ventured out into the cold today to check on the hummingbirds; along with
several other birders, I watched the Rufous sporadically appear between
12:30 and 1:00, using both feeders and perching in several favored bushes.
She was rather talkative towards the end of this time, and I kept hoping to
see the Black-chinned; however, there was a Mockingbird perched (oblivious)
in the Silver Bell tree for a few minutes, and this may have been the
source of the Rufous' agitation. At 12:45, I spotted the Ovenbird moving
along the foundation of the Arts & Industries building; it allowed a brief
but fantastic view. A song sparrow was also rooting around the base of the
Silver Bell at one point. Very cold, but worth it to know that the Rufous,
at least, may become our Christmas hummingbird. Should we hang up an itty
bitty stocking for her? : )
