Observations:
Remarkable! To have 10 migrants a day so early in the season is a good day
but after yesterday's count we were hopeful for a repeat. Morning was a bit
slow with wind that was more WSW. A few BW were picked up out on western
slope heading SW. By 2 p.m. winds were shifting more SW and birds were
found more to the east or directly overhead heading S. As things heated up
and winds dimished, birds were found high up catching a few thermals. By 3
p.m. with no wind and increasing cloud coverage the birds were dropping. An
impressive kettle of five BW, soon joined by a 6th, circled out over the
piedmont to the east. Between 3-4 p.m. EST a total of 19 BW came through.
The first BE of the season, an adult, was first spotted by Gordy Adamski as
it popped out of cloud high up, sailing above circling BW. The second BE
(first year) came across the gap a few short yards above the building
heading south and flapping the entire way with no wind and overcast skies.
Prothonary Warbler flew low over field in front of observers near the old
skating rink.
A very early Woolie Bear.
Butterflies galore including 4 Monarch's.
Predictions:
cooler and chance of rain
