For anyone who hasn't yet seen one, there was a Red-necked Grebe on Woodglen
Lake near the intersection of Ox Road and Burke Centre Parkway (ADC Map
Coordinates 20 H 5) Monday morning. It appears to be molting into breeding
plumage, with the black cap noticeable, but the red on the neck is subtle.
Access to the feeder stream end of the lake is from Zion Drive (park on Kipp
Court and walk along Zion to a white metal gate), but better access for today's
very wet conditions is from the dam, which has an asphalt path across it. The
dam can be accessed through the Bonnie Brae neighborhood off Fireside Court.
Bonus for checking out the Grebe was finding a Downy Woodpecker nest hole with
young that appear ready to fledge. Guess they'll join the parents on my suet
feeder this week! The two pair of Canadas on the lake have both hatched young
this year. One pair has 7 goslings that hatched last week and the other has 3
that appear to have hatched within the past two days.
