VA Birders,
Spent a few minutes in the mud at Monticello this morning. Pretty quiet,
some: parula, blackpoll, blk-throated blue, and red start hanging out with rest
of the usual suspects.
Birded Chincoteaque Island, Assateague Island, Prime Hook, and Bombay Hook
this past weekend. Weather was just short of dreadful, but between rain showers
I picked up 135 species.
Best birds at Chincoteague included common loon, little blue heron,
tricolored heron, yellow crowned night heron, cattle egret, glossy ibis,
black-bellied plover, american oystecatcher, willet, long-billed curlew, rudy
turnstone, dunlin, common tern, least tern, and the rest of the usual suspects.
My best bird was white-crowned sparrow off boardwalk near beach in the preserve.
Won't post much on Assateague, Prime Hook, and Bombay Hook, except for the
following:
Piping plovers and brown pelicans at Assateague. Lots of shore birds at
Prime Hook, including some not seen at Choncoteague. Also 12 species of
Warblers at Prime Hook, eight of which are apparently breeding there. American
golden plover and horned lark on Whitehall Road outside of Bombay Hook.
Black-necked stilt at Bombay Hook too. Finally, king rail, common snipe, and
vesper sparrow just north of Woodland beach in field with small pond across
form the aquatic research center.
