I have no detailed information on roosts and locations, but here in Southwest
Vienna, the crow population is really not in evidence. On a good day, you
would see sixty to seventy in large flocks, perhaps originating from
Southside Park or Prosperity Avenue parks and streams. I have a large maple
that usually has a few per hour and tonight we noted that it has been days.
The lack of any noise is most remarkable.
Almost like they were shell-shocked, two very quiet crows slowly flew from
perch to perch this evening around 7. I watched them as they sat, mouths
open much of the time, and not a sound in a twenty minute period. Their
movements are slow and deliberate without the spontaneity we usually enjoy.
Not a sound.
One sat so still on a telephone cable that I felt he was already paralyzed,
and then he loped along to join his companion. It reminded me of the Stephen
King novel about the Dark Tower. Dwindling population and dreary outlook.
Maybe the observation of the chimney swifts and the nighthawks will do
something for us when such a depressing sight is occupying our thoughts.
