[va-bird] FW: Hummingbirds in Central Virginia

Larry and Thelma, and all you hummer lovers,

I asked Bob Sargent to refresh my memory about how to know how many hummers
you might REALLY have in your yards and at your feeders.

He tells me that if you multiply by 6, the number of hummers you can see and
count, you will get closer to the real count of how many birds are there.

This must have been a good breeding season for these little guys!

Do your math and enjoy!

VA-birders --

Thelma Dalmas sent the following information on Central Virginia
hummingbirds. Rather interesting statistics. It would be fun to have 50
hummingbirds coming to the feeders. Wow! -- Larry Lynch,

In a local nature column in the Lynchburg News and Advance, people were
asked to watch their hummingbird feeders on August 17 and report the
total number of birds. The following reports were received.

Sixty-four people responded and counted a total of 825 hummingbirds
visiting 213 feeders in the area. Reports from the various localities
follow.

Amherst County 7 participants 24 feeders 110
birds
Appomattox County 7 participants 31 feeders 101
birds
Bedford County 17 participants 59 feeders 281
birds
Campbell County 19 participants 54 feeders 205
birds
Lynchburg 8 participants 15 feeders
36 birds
Nelson County 5 participants 28 feeders 84
birds
Pittsylvania County 1 participant 2 feeders
8 birds

There are a lot of hummingbirds at feeders in Central Virginia. A close
look at the numbers will reveal that, on average, participants have
between three and four feeders and are host to about thirteen birds. The
high count for birds was 50, reported by three people, two in Bedford
County and one in Appomattox County. The high count for feeders was
twelve, from a report in Nelson County and Appomattox County.
