This past Sunday while manning the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch, we noted several
unidentified high flying passerines. A few were discovered down low in the
clumps of vegetation along the mountainside including a Yellow-breasted Chat
in the holly bushes next to the entrance to The Inn at Afton.
Early that morning I heard what sounded like the twill of a Palm Warbler and
caught a brief glimpse of "yellow" in brushy clumps bordering lower hillside
before it flew off. At that time I mentioned I thought I had just seen and
heard a Palm but did not note it as a confirmed sighting.
In reviewing the tally sheet from yesterday (Tuesday, Sept. 14), counters
reported Palm Warblers, as in plural. They also noted a first year female
Cape May Warbler. I don't have my records readily available but it seems a
bit early for Palm Warbler.
