At 8:45 this morning Mike Boatwright, John Fox and myself found a
PACIFIC LOON at Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg County. We originally
scoped the bird from the parking lot lookout on the right just as you
cross the dam coming from Tailrace Park. We had good views from this
vantage point but then the bird started to drift towards North Bend
Park. We ended up getting very close looks from the park and were soon
joined by Bev Leeuwenburg and Jen Folts who were just as delighted as we
were to see this awesome bird. To reach this area, take the first road
that forks left as soon as you enter North Bend Park. Follow this road
all the way down and you will see a large parking lot on your left that
accommodates boats. There's a long dock attached to this lot. Look for
the bird in that area. After birding elsewhere during the day, we went
back at 1:45 and saw the loon still in the same area by the park. I did
manage to get a few decent photos for documentation.
There were other good birds seen today also. Along Redlawn Road, we
encountered a pair of LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES. At Tailrace Park and the
surrounding woodlands, there were a couple of NORTHERN PARULAS, a few
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, PALM WARBLER,
OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER.
CLIFF SWALLOWS were seen by the dam.
At Palmer Point, we encountered a SPOTTED SANDPIPER and an EASTERN
KINGBIRD.
Over at the Dick Cross WMA, we saw a WHITE-EYED VIREO. At Clyde's Pond
there were 4 pairs of BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a pair of RING-NECKED DUCKS, a
few AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS and a half dozen WILSON'S SNIPE. A great day
to be out. Good birding.
