The Northern Virginia Bird Club meeting is Thursday night, April 28, 2005. The
program is a trip to the "Land Down Under". Rita Sambruna and Joe Pesce, both
PhDs teaching in the Physics Department at George Mason University, will lead
our tour to Australia. We will learn that some 15-20% of the world's parrot
species are found in the Land Down Under. In this slide talk, they will present
a parrot-related travelogue of their September 2003 visit to three Australian
urban areas. In a short two-week period, in relatively densely populated
neighborhoods, Joe Pesce and Rita Sambruna encountered over 10 different parrot
species. Their presentation will include both the sights and the sounds of
these little guys, including the every-mischievous and ubiquitous Sulphur
Crested Cockatoos and the elusive Gang-Gang and Black Cockatoos.
Early Bird Refreshments are at 7:30. The meetings start at 8:00 p.m., but come
early for refreshments and conversation with old and new friends. There will be
a drawing for a door prize, maybe even more than one! You have to be there to
win, so come join us!
Where?: Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 8922 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, at the
intersection of Rte. 236 (Little River Turnpike) and Guinea Road, about 1.8
miles west of the Beltway. From the Beltway (Rte. 495), going west along Rte.
236, turn right at the fifth traffic light (opposite Guinea Rd.); then turn
immediately left onto the service road. Go past the fire station, and turn
right at the second driveway into the church parking lot. Park behind the
church.
Everyone is welcome.
