Birders,
I was surprised this afternoon to notice a BROWN THRASHER strolling about in
the grass beneath the willow oak in front of Mason Neck State Park's visitor
center. I didn't even have to go find it, just sit back and watch from
behind the VC desk. Nice. Also I heard my first YELLOW-THROATED VIREO of
the season around 2:30 while I was out posting flyers in the park. I
haven't done any active birding today, but below is a list of species I've
seen and/or heard while driving in, staffing the VC, or walking briefly
between trail kiosks. The list probably could have been much longer had I
not had so much computer work today-- the computer is in a *gasp* windowless
back room. What a waste!
Great Blue Heron
Canada Goose
Mallard
Lesser Scaup
Bald Eagle
Caspian Tern
Mourning Dove
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Eastern Phoebe
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Eastern Bluebird
American Robin
Brown Thrasher
Yellow-throated Vireo (FOS)
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Northern Cardinal
Chipping Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Dark-eyed Junco
Brown-headed Cowbird (lots of courtship going on around the birdfeeders! fun
to watch.)
American Goldfinch
Don't forget this Saturday's bird walk here at the park. We meet at the
Visitor Center for a 9am start (rain or shine), then hike the Bay View Trail
and return about 11am. No pre-registration needed.
Good birding,
