A 'first' for my local patch - Annandale, Northern Virginia - a female
Long-tailed Duck on Lake Braddock yesterday.
Lake Braddock is a small reservoir, surrounded by town houses, but with a
substantial width near the dam. Nothing at all in summer, but occasional
Bufflehead, Ruddy Ducks, Pied-billed Grebes, Megansers and Cormorants at other
times. However, nothing at all is reliable.
If anyone is interested, it is best seen from the dam top, accessed from
Raintree Road, which comes off Lake Braddock Drive, itself coming off Burke
Lake
Road (Route 645) at Lake Braddock High School, about a mile south of Braddock
Road (Route 620), which in turn crosses the Capital Beltway (I-495) at Exit
54.
