Greetings,
After birding at the Occoquan NWR this morning, I headed over to the Upper
Occoquan Sewage Authority to scope waterfowl and to my surprise, I found a
female Long-tailed Duck! I was sorting through the Common and Hooded
Mergansers when I saw the LTDU and said "what the heck!". I ran back to the
car to get my Sibley book to double check (since I don't see many of these
ducks) and I was right. She looked even prettier when the snow started
falling. I watched the bird from the parking lot from 11:40 a.m. until noon,
when it swam around a corner out of sight.
The two Horned Grebes are still there along with a Canvasback.
