Paula Sullivan, Laura Catterton, Paul Kane and I headed for Occoquan Refuge (PW
County) after deciding a trip to Maryland would be a logistical nightmare.
Glad we changed our minds!  The highlight bird of the day was a Vesper Sparrow,
foraging along the first road to the right after entering the refuge. A hard
bird to find in these parts in winter!  Paul was the first to notice the white
outer tail feathers of this interesting looking bird.  The Vesper was extremely
cooperative, giving us great looks at a distance of as close as 10 feet.  I
even was able to see the subdued, not noticeable chestnut coloration of the
wing coverts. My best bird of the week, except for the California Gull at
Neabsco creek on Tuesday!

Our little group also noticed two fixed flocks of juncos, Field Sparrows, and
American Tree Sparrows.  One flock contained 13 Am. Trees and the other 5, for
a total of 18 American Tree Sparrows today.  Quite a nice way to end a week of
birding before heading back to shift work tomorrow night!
