VA BIRDers,
A solidly good day of migrants at Leesylvania SP this morning; the flight
exhibited good diversity but was somewhat lacking in numbers. Highlights were
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Philadelphia Vireo, Blue-winged Warbler, Cape May
Warblers, and Summer Tanagers. The flight was dominated by Chimney Swifts, No.
Flickers, Magnolia and Black-throated Green Warblers, and Common Yellowthroats.
A good showing by Rose-breasted Grosbeaks was also noted.
The wave started near the Lee mansion ruins at Freestone Point; many birds were
seen "dancing" on the tops of barely sunlit trees on the hillside. I followed
one vector of the wave along the road edge where I met up with Laura Catterton
and we continued to work the wave in that area. Then we moved to the
boardwalk/marshy area near the trestle where we found a few birds still hanging
about (including second looks at the Philly). A visit to the Beaver pond area
did not net much else new, but yet I got the itchy feeling that oporonis was
about and just out of our sight. Here is the list of the notable birds.
