Back Bay Birding Club enjoyed a morning at Kiptopeke State Park. We spent
most of our time at the banding station and the hawk platform. Jethro was his
usual wonderful self explaining each bird caught and sharing information about
the birds. While we were there he caught a Winter Wren, Golden & Ruby Crowned
Kinglets, Black-throated Blue, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Northern Parula,Common
Yellowthroat, Redstart & Hooded Warblers. Also netted were: Red-eyed Vireo,
Hermit &
Wood Thrush, Gray Catbird, Swamp Sparrow, Carolina Wren and a Sharp-shinned
Hawk. If you are reading this Jethro....thanks a million!
Up on the hawk platform we saw: Sharp-shinned, Coopers, Red-shouldered &
Red-tailed Hawks along with Osprey, Bald Eagles, Kestrels and Turkey Vultures.
Late morning we headed over to the Eastern Shore NWR and added Black Vultures
and Golden Eagle to our Raptor list! We also saw more of the same species we
had seen at Kiptopeke. Down Ramp Road we saw Gadwall, Mallards and Widgeons
in the pond and an imm. Little Blue Heron.
We only stopped at Island 1 on the CBBT on the way home but did see: Black
Scoters, American Oystercatchers, Sanderlings and the ever-present Rudy
Turnstones.
Total species count for the day was 59.
One the way home traveling down Atlantic Ave we spotted Virginia Beach's
Peregrine Falcon on the Y of the Holiday Inn.
