Howdy all,
During the past few days, we have seen a big increase in birds in the area. A
lot of species are on the move and nice weather too! The banding station has
been busy but the rains today have kept us from netting this morning. There are
still birds in the area however.
As a side note, someone wrote to the listserv asking about Connecticut Warblers
here. They do migrate through the park but even here, they are hit and miss.
Last year we banded five Connecticuts and in 1999 a total of nine were banded.
The park is a good of place as any to find these elusive birds. What I
recommend is coming right after a colf front passes through the area. There
will be an increase in bird numbers and with this, hopefully, an increase in
the likelihood of finding a CONW. The best(?) place in the park would most
likely be near the banding station on the south side of the park. I now a few
CONW have been seen already this season in the park and the area nearby. Ned
Brinkley would be a better source for finding CONW on the eastern shore. He
could tell you more about their numbers on the CBBT and in the area as a whole.
I am only familiar with the area at the park. Good luck however!
As for banding, the numbers and species below are birds banded on 9/24 and 9/25
only. We didn't band today (9/26) because of rain and tomorrow is still up in
the air.
When going through the list, notice that we caught one Yellow-rump Warbler.
That means they are on their way! Which in turn means, we are about to get
busy!
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
