Brian Sullivan phoned this morning from near the Aquarium at New Orleans,
Louisiana, to report dozens of Magnificent Frigatebirds moving northward
along the Mississippi River with the landfalling ISIDORE. If past storms are
any indication, the Mississippi River Valley, Tennessee and Ohio River
Valleys, and perhaps westernmost Virginia could see a few frigatebirds today
or in the next few days. Areas with large lakes seem to be the best places
to look, but these birds can appear anywhere. Folks who staff hawkwatches
should be especially keen to watch for frigatebirds; there is a remote
possibility of Sooty Terns turning up in the interior as well. If out
driving in rain or wind, use plenty of caution; if flash-flooding is a
possibility, avoid flood-prone areas until the threat is past.
