Jim and I walked at Dutch Gap this morning, and a beautiful morning it was!
Birding was slow; we didn't see an eagle for the first time in about two
weeks. Good news is that the park maintenance has begun work on boardwalk and
walking trails. They said access will be closed for "a few days" until work
is complete. Keeping our fingers crossed.
We did see a great many ducks: lots of mallards and gadwalls, a few wigeons
and northern shovelers, and two ring necks. We got a great look at a red
shouldered hawk perched low and close to the road in his/her hunting mode.
Totally unconcerned about observers, he dilligently scanned for prey for at
least an hour. We also saw a Cooper's hawk, some flickers, bluebirds and
redwings, and, at the boat landing, about 200 black vultures. Guess the plan
to get rid of them was unsuccessful.
