In a cold, driving rain, from about 12:10-12:30, I visited the Ripley
Garden to check on our newly banded hummers. It was only a few minutes
before I heard, and saw, the Rufous, making the rounds of the Salvias,
perching in the favored trees, and generally appearing much less
uncomfortable than I was. The Rufous has apparently already discovered the
second feeder in the weeping willow, for at one point she zipped past, very
close to my face, and into the branches of the Willow. I heard numerous
squeaks and chirps, but I wasn't able to see through the dense willow
leaves whether the Black-chinned was also present. However, based on the
feisty little Rufous' irritated chirrups and patrol-like behavior, I
strongly suspect that the Black-chinned is still in the area. I also saw
the banded Mockingbird, a common yellowthroat, and a Homo sapiens in a
corner window of the A&I building, who was probably quite startled to see
my binoculars aimed in his direction...
