Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end   time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours

Official Counter: Ian Topolsky

Observers:        BJ Westervelt, George Wheaton, Lad Topolsky, Ralph Wall

Visitors:
Allen Hart, good to see you again and do come on back.

Weather:
Once again we were left with the residual effects of a former-hurricane's
passage north; NW winds (at 2-3) and a sky full of clouds (85-100% much of
the day, with a brief period or two of 60-70%).

If those blue skies of late hadn't scarred me so badly, I might've asked
for just a little less clouds today...
High Temp was 72F.

Observations:
Ah, my Wednesday Crew- The law firm of Westervelt, Wheaton and Wall, and
Alan Scott, aka Lad Topolsky, aka the Green Lantern himself.
The best bird of the day, by far, was not seen at 2:15. George predicted
it down to the minute... how does he do that?

Osprey plugged onward with 9 for the day, none packing a lunch. Talk of
an earlier than usual migration may make this year's run at the record a
real nail-biter, 49 to go...

Bald Eagles seem off this year, we'll see.
Breakdown: 1- 1st yr bird, 1- 3rd yr bird.

The Pinheads, they wanna break into triple-digits- close today with 96.
Again I am pulling for the Sharp-shinneds this year as I'm oddly partial
to those spastic, wound-up little buggers...

Harriers. It's too early to start hypothesizing, but I don't love what I
see so far. Again, we shall see...

I know autumn is truly at hand when I come home from Snickers and find a
Ruby-crowned Kinglet in my crab-apple tree.

Lots o' geese today.  278, with one very large, goofy
looking monster mixed in with one flock. His name is Mongo.

Blue Jays were fun today with no clicker- 793, Cedar Waxwing- 34,
Red-headed Woodpecker- 3, Red-bellied- 1, Downy- 1, Yellow-Shafted
Flicker, Chimney Swift- 14, Eastern Towhee- 1, American Redstart- 2,
Blackpoll- 1, Rose-breasted Grosbeak- 1.

Predictions:

    So ?

  "SIGNS POINT TO YES"

Snickers Gap Hawkwatch was established in 1990.  It is located in
northern Virginia, on the Clarke and Loudoun County line.  It is reached
by taking VA Route 7 to the county line, which runs atop the ridge at
Snickers Gap.  On the south side of Route 7 is a commuter parking lot.
The count is conducted from there.  It is a volunteer site, and is counted
in fall only, from late August until late November or early December.
There are no facilities at the site, so bring a snack, drinks, and a
chair.  Many of the birds can be distant, and a scope is helpful.

As a volunteer site, we are always looking to increase our pool of
counters.  We are eager to train those who have never counted, but are
skilled with hawk identification.  We are also willing to pair
inexperienced observers with experienced counters.  Please contact the
compiler, Todd Day, at blkvulture@xxxxxxx with any questions or if you are
interested in participating in the count.
