For the second week in a row, there were no participants in the Sunday
morning Friends of Dyke Marsh walk. Although viewing conditions were
tough, it was beautiful with snow falling for about an hour. Thirteen
Bufflehead were actively feeding only about 30 feet from the shoreline
of the Belle Haven picnic area. One male Lesser Scaup was patrolling
the marina, and another pair swam together near the point at the end of
Haul Rd. A photo of the female can be seen at
http://www4.pbase.com/paulasullivan/image/39206748 Far off the point ;
to the east, were 430+ Common Mergansers, while to the south, the males
in a small flock of 22 Hooded Mergs were vigorously displaying. Land
birds were scarce, with only low numbers of common ones seen or heard.
