Taking major advantage of a wonderful morning the ever-faithful Renee
Hudgins and I did a six-mile roundtrip slow walk along Washington Ditch in the
Great Dismal Swamp NWR.  We're still awaiting the first migrants and
butterflies, but the walk was well worth the effort.  Woodpeckers were the
stars of the morning with many of them drumming, calling, and chasing rivals
through the trees.  Hermit Thrushes, Catbirds, and Robins were taking advantage
of the berries available on the many vine tangles.  Sparrows were also in
evidence, though the numbers recorded are probably low.  Singing birds included
Pine Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Song Sparrow, and Carolina Chickadee.
Others were vocalizing but I wouldn't call it singing.  A Barred Owl hooted at
us as we got back to the cars.
The list follows in the order the birds were seen.  The total numbers are
much higher than the previous two weeks, an indication of the later date, good
weather, and excellent hearing conditions.  Carolina Wren 11, Common Grackle
28, Red-shouldered Hawk 3, Northern Flicker 3, Pine Warbler 1, Yellow-rumped
Warbler 5, White-breasted Nuthatch 4, American Goldfinch 2, Winter Wren 3, Wood
Duck 8, Turkey Vulture 5, Downy Woodpecker 12, White-throated Sparrow 33,
Carolina Chickadee 5, Song Sparrow 17, Red-bellied Woodpecker 6, American Robin
4, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1, Swamp Sparrow 8, Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2, Hermit
Thrush 5, Pileated Woodpecker 5, Double-crested Cormorant 1, Gray Catbird 2,
Tufted Titmouse 2, Eastern Towhee 1, Brown Thrasher 1, Hairy Woodpecker 1, Wild
Turkey 1, Belted Kingfisher 2, Northern Junco 3, Barred Owl 1.  32 species
I'll be away next week.  My next swamp walk will be the first day of spring
Monday, March 21 at 7:30am at Jericho Ditch Lane parking lot.  Please join me
if you wish.  No advance notice is necessary; just show up.  Welcome in the
spring.
