Waterfowl Birders,
Six of us covered the Mason Neck area of Fairfax Co and also counted
waterfowl along the Maryland Shoreline across from Mason Neck, mainly in
Charles Co just north of Indian Head. Early morning fog was problematic.
Ice choked marshes and bays kept waterfowl to the main portions of the
Potomac, esp. along the Maryland shoreline (which was probably not adequately
covered). Even with a caveat, the day went well with scaup taking top
numbers - the final tally may vary. No scoters or Long-tailed Ducks were
observed. Here are some preliminary totals of some species of interest we
counted:
Pied-billed Grebe 2
Double-crested Cormorant 7
Canada Goose 672
Tundra Swan 587
Gadwall 6
Am. Wigeon 4
Am. Black Duck 879
Mallard 113
Green-winged Teal 11
Canvasback 61
Redhead 1
Greater Scaup 7
Lesser Scaup 3920
scaup sp. 1100+
Bufflehead 30
Hooded Merganser 7
Common Merganser 278
Red-breasted Merganser 3
Ruddy Duck 156
Bald Eagle 12
Am. Coot 12
Greater Yellowlegs 2
American Pipit 2
Eastern Towhee 11 (pretty much one group at the Colonel's house)

addendum: there was a Richardson's type Canada Goose at Dyke Marsh yesterday
and Sherman Suter reports 2 Wood Ducks settling into Hunting Creek Bay this
evening.
