Thanks go to Deblyn Flack who spent hours and
hours organizing this comprehensive survey for
Fairfax Audubon, to Kurt Gaskill for his
extensive work in organizing this area, and to
the following people who worked with me to tally
waterfowl between Burke Lake, Fair Lakes, and
Pickett Industrial Park (ADC maps 12-15, 20-22):
Doren Burell, Gabrial Markoff, Laurel and Sandra
Kretzer, Kristy Liercke, and FHS Field Natural
History students Taylor Butch (all-day!), James
Stretch, Julie Mezainis, Demir Dogrul, and Tommy
Fortkort.
Most of the small lakes and ponds were frozen and
all of the big lakes were mostly frozen, so our
efforts were concentrated on the bigger lakes and
those with fountains.  I scouted out several of
the smaller ones yesterday to confirm that they
were frozen.

Here is what we saw today at the different
locations:
1. BURKE LAKE 7-9 AM and 3:15-4:30 PM ADC Map 20
In the AM, the foggy conditions on the open water
and the rising sun behind many of the waterfowl
was a photographically spectacular sight, but it
made identification and counting difficult so we
did our best and then returned after the fog
lifted.  In the afternoon, after we had finished
our other sites, we returned again and were
stunned by an impressive adult bald eagle in the
golden afternoon light soaring from its lake-side
perches to skim 4 different fishes off the frozen
surface of the lake with its outstretched talons.
Awesome! (How did those fishes get onto the ice?)
The geese coming into the lake in that light were
also wonderfully beautiful!
