When I went out to fill my feeders last night I heard numerous flight
calls overhead, including what I am pretty sure was a gray-cheeked
thrush. In anticipation of a good flight last night I brought my bins
to work and stole an hour to walk through Constitution Gardens and the
War Memorial in DC. I was right about the flight. Migrants abounded.
Particularly abundant were blackpolls and yellow-rumps. Since these two
species characterize the beginning (yellow-rump) and end (blackpoll) of
migration, I was surprised to find so many of each.
Notables were least flycatcher (1), Swainson's thrush (1), veery (2),
rose-breasted grosbeak (4), peewee (2), and a dozen species of warbler,
inlcuding Cape May (2), blackburnian (2), chestnut-sided (2) and
magnolia (2). A partial list is below:
