Yesterday's drizzly weather kept me from going afield, but that turned ou=
t to be a good thing. Bird activity around the house was enough to keep =
things interesting anyway. Early on I had my first Dark-eyed Junco and f=
irst Hermit Thrush of the season. Shortly thereafter I had what will like=
ly be the last Black-throated Green Warbler and last Indigo Bunting for t=
he year. Things got even better when a Clay-colored Sparrow showed up, pe=
cking at seed under my feeder. A new yard bird and only the second of thi=
s species I've ever seen. I was able to sit and watch it for nearly twe=
nty minutes from about 15 feet away. Spectacular!
Later in the aft=
ernoon, a group of 4 Northern Pintails flew across, adding a second new s=
pecies for the yard list. Given that I've been in my current home for 15=
years now, new species are few and far between. Getting two in one day =
is a real bonus. I guess I'm glad it wasn't sunny, or I would have misse=
d it all.
