I ran along part of the W&OD Trail yesterday afternoon west of Vienna,
in Fairfax County.
At milepost 14 on the south side of the trail, there is a singing
yellow-breasted chat in the large multiflor/Japanese honeysuckle clumps
adjacent to the trail.
In this same area this year, I heard towhees, orchard orioles, indigo
bunting, common yellowthroat and white-eyed vireo. In the past five
years, both prairie warbler and blue grosbeak have nested here. I
haven't heard either there this year.
Just 200 yds. west of the 14 mile post, a northern parula warbler is
singing and has been on territory for two weeks.
I'd nominate the mile trail section from 13.5 to 14.5 as the best mile
of birding on the 43 mile long trail. Does anyone else have any
favorite miles?
