Hello, birders.
At Blandy Experimental Farm in Clarke Co. I heard a
couple of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and saw my first
NORTHERN HARRIER of the season. Common migrants there
were INDIGO BUNTINGS and FIELD, SONG and CHIPPING
SPARROWS. An AM. KESTREL and a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK
were perched just a couple of feet apart in the same
tree, showing no outward aggression toward one
another. I was hoping for shorebirds at the wetlands
behind the gazebo but this habitat is all dried up.
At Sky Meadows SP in Fauquier Co. I saw a COMMON
NIGHTHAWK fly over the Visitor Center in
mid-afternoon, heading west. A quick check shows no
prior records that I know of for this species there,
which seems odd. A mixed flock of at least 3 species
of swallows flew over the fishing pond twice. They
were quick but I was able to pick out at least one
BANK SWALLOW. A 3rd year stately BALD EAGLE was
perched on a snag near the fishing pond. I hadn't
seen one at the park in months.
I didn't see the recently reported Loggerhead Shrike.
The park staff that I spoke to hadn't seen it, either.
