I was approaching
the intersection of Blake Lane and Chain Bridge Road (Rt 123). It was the
first time I ever saw one in the Vienna area. Have I been asleep, or is
this sighting a tad unusual.
A couple years ago, there was a pretty healthy vulture roost in McLean near
or at a place called Evans Farms (at least I think that's the name of the
place). It was at Route 123 less than a mile east of the beltway. The roost
had a couple hundred birds, if not many more at times. Every time I was near
the roost, it was about fifty percent Black Vultures, and fifty percent
Turkey. Bob Abrams has a great photograph of one pulling on a pig's tail
trying to remove a dung snack.
I have seen fair numbers of both vulture species roosting on some of the
towers around Tyson's Corner.
I see Black Vultures routinely along route 66 until about Sycamore Street
heading east, though I have seen them inside Sycamore as well, including from
Washington, D.C.
Cheers...
