The Friends of Huntley Meadows Park will be running a drive this April and
May to collect used binoculars, scopes, field guides (Spanish language
esp.), ornithology texts, even backpacks, to donate to Birders Exchange.
Birders Exchange is a program that gets used birding equipment into the
hands of Latin American researchers and conservationists working on avian
conservation issues. These researchers are generally under funded and lack
even basic equipment for bird research like binoculars. The American Birding
Association administers the program, collects the equipment and then has it
couriered to Latin America by traveling birders.
Bring your donations to the Huntley Meadows Park visitors center, with your
name and address attached and the Friends group will take care of shipping
the equipment to the ABA. The Parks address is 3701 Lockheed Blvd.,
Alexandria, VA. The visitors center is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
but closed on Tuesdays. Weekend hours are 9 to 5 for April and May. All
optics should be in good working order. Donations are tax deductible and
letters will be sent from ABA to all who donate.
