Hello VA-Birders:
There was a Common Loon, in breeding plumage, on the Potomac at Riverbend
Park (Fairfax County) when I was there about 5:30 this afternoon. When I
first spotted the loon it was in mid river, making me wish I had brought my
scope. But then it drifted over to a few feet off the Virginia bank, where
it floated and preened, giving me the closest look I have ever had at a
Common Loon. Then it returned to the middle of the river, dived, and
disappeared. Today the Potomac at Riverbend was smooth as glass - more like
a lake than a river - which may be what attracted the loon.
