Although I'm no "Dr. Tatiana," I am interested in bird behavior.
Today, May 29th, I saw a male and a female Blue Grosbeak
in a grassy area near the observation platform on the "backside"
of Huntley Meadows (from the Telegraph Road entrance).
Although listed as "uncommon" on the park checklist, they "have
nested in the park."
Over on the other side, near the observation tower, I watched
with some amusement 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoo nestlings do
synchronized begging. Breast to breast they would rise up,
opening the beaks and waggling their heads, all without a
peep! Many nestlings call when they are hungry but these two
were relying on sign language.
Another interesting sighting was a flyover by an osprey holding
a large fish in the optimal aerodynamic position. This fish looked
too big to have come from the pond but the osprey was making
sure it got home to junior(s).
