The Hampton Roads Bird Club visited the main section of Beaverdam Park for its
May field trip. We had 21 enthusiastic participants, a record!
The beautiful song of the WOOD THRUSH could be heard in different areas, and
some of us even had a good look at one. The bird of the day (if you count the
time we spent trying to see it) had to be KENTUCKY WARBLER. While we all heard
it well, only one person saw it. However, we were all able to get great looks
at three male SCARLET TANAGER.
FOS birds for the park were YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and ACADIAN FLYCATCHER.
In the reservoir we were surprised to find one male LESSER SCAUP and a pair of
RUDDY DUCKS still here. An immature BALD EAGLE and an OSPREY flew over as we
were checking out the water.

After a picnic lunch in the park, my husband Lee and I weren't ready to quit
birding, so we checked ou the NORTH section of Beaverdam between 1:00 and 2:30
pm. We were surprised and delighted with the afternoon activity. We had 7
species not found in the morning:

Brown Thrasher - 2
Yellow-throated Vireo - 3
Common Yellowthroat - 8
Yellow Warbler - 1
Because of the habitat, Indigo Bunting and Common Yellowthroat are abundant
here. We also saw 4 ORCHARD ORIOLE and a female SUMMER TANAGER.
