VA Birders, As I've already gotten a question from someone about whether the Barnacle Goose is "countable", I figured I should send out a global response. VARCOM's determinations are not intended to rule on whether a bird is "countable" for listing purposes. It is up to the individual to decide whether or not to count a bird on his/her lists. If a birder wants his/her lists to be consistent with ABA listing rules, it would be up to the ABA (rather than VARCOM) to determine whether birds accepted in Category 3 in Virginia are "countable" under their rules.
