I have not been following all of the spottings of the
Barnacle Goose that have been posted so I do not known
how far the debate has gone as to whether or not this
is to be considered a wild bird or an escapee. Lest we
forget, there has been another sighting of a Barnacle
Goose recently. I found a Barnacle Goose in late
February 1998 in Russell County, Virginia. It was also
in pristine condition with no leg bands, abnormal
feather wear or any other signs of having been a
captive bird. It was in the company of a group of
migratory Canade Geese and it departed with them. It
was photographed, videotaped and documented. A report
was sent to the records committee and after a while it
was accepted as being of unknown origin. As the person
in Maryland who had one recently commented our
southwest Virginia bird did not generate much
interest. It would seem only appropriate that if this
bird is accepted as being a wild bird then the earlier
sighting should also be revisited.
