On Friday afternoon I heard what I thought was a Baltimore Oriole singing
in my woods. When I looked out the window I could see a bird high in the
Tulip Tree hanging is oriole style. I grabbed the binoculars and sure
enough it was. He was so beautiful. But I only saw him for a few
seconds. He moved on but I could still hear him for a bit. And that was
it. I don't expect to see him again soon. That is only the second time
in 20 years here that I have seen this bird so I was very excited even
for the brief glimpse.
Another first of the season here was a Wood Thrush. I heard him singing
this morning but didn't see him as he stayed down in the woods. I have
hope that he will stay. The pair of Gray Catbirds were back today. The
two Chipping Sparrows come regularly to the feeders and seem to have
settled in. Hardly saw any of them last year.
