Just to see if this storm blew anything our way I checked out some areas
along the flooded south river between Waynesboro and Stuart's Draft this
morning.
The best find was a single Black Skimmer sitting on a small grassy island in
the flooded banks of the river behind the Stuart's Draft wastewater
treatment plant. Like today's Rockingham County skimmer reported by John
Irvine, this is a first record for Augusta County as well to my knowledge.
In addition to the skimmer there were 4 Common Terns and 14 Laughing Gulls
flying about and periodically resting with the skimmer. There were
hundreds of Tree Swallows streaming by or perched on the wires as well as an
occasional Barn Swallow and one Bank Swallow. Other birds in the vicinity
included some Killdeer, Mallards, one Wood Duck and a single unidentified
"peep" in flight.
Also, a Double-crested Cormorant was present in downtown Waynesboro by the
Wayne Avenue bridge. This is presumably the same bird that has been seen
here on and off for over one week. At Coyner Springs Park a solitary
Solitary Sandpiper was present.
