Hi all,
The below message was sent to me by Steve Rottenborn and I am forwarding it
to VA-BIRD at his request. Sounds like Steve had an excellent storm-chasing
session!

Subject: Lake Anna birds
I can't post to VA-BIRD from my computer here at work, and may not have power
back up at home for a while, so could one of you please forward this to
VA-BIRD? Thanks a lot.
This morning (19 Sep.) I scoped Lake Anna from the east side of the Rt. 208
bridge from 6:15 to 7:15, and again from 8:10 until 9:40 (I spent the
intervening period trying in vain to get near the southeastern part of the
lake, but
was blocked by fallen trees). No tubenoses, no Sooty Terns, but no complaints
from me. The list follows:
1 Willet
1 Red-necked Phalarope
2 juv. Parasitic Jaegers (1 present for at least 50 minutes, chasing terns
and being chased by a Bald Eagle)
130 Laughing Gulls
13 Ring-billed Gulls
4 Herring Gulls
4 Great Black-backed Gulls
1 juv. Sabine's Gull (visible for 15 minutes -- flew around a lot, and sat on
the water for 5 minutes)
5 Caspian Terns
52 Royal Terns
11 Forster's Terns
275 Common Terns
1 Arctic Tern (apparently second-summer plumage -- great views for
about 4 minutes, with Common Terns)
1 juv. Least Tern
5 Black Terns
2 ad. Black Skimmers
All the birds were flying southeastward, eventually crossing over Rt. 208 at
the bridge (not crossing over the causeway).
Good birding,
Steve Rottenborn
