It seems like several people were birding on the
NNK this weekend. Very cool! I was in King
George and Upper Westmoreland COunties all day on
Sunday April 9. I visited the ponds along route
3 between King George and the Stafford County
line, then went to Toby's Point (RRVNWR in King
George County), then to Muse Rd overlooking the
Maryland Potomac in Westmoreland Co, then to
Mothershead (RRVNWR) in Leedstown and two private
properties also in Leedstown (Westmoreland Co).
Here are the totals in no particular order:
169 double-crested cormorant: many on pound nets
in Rappahannock, and many at KG ponds
Only 91 Canada Geese, many paired up, but many in
flocks
5 mallards
9 singing meadowlarks
417 cowbirds
120 common grackles
125 red-winged blackbirds
15 rusty blackbirds (Leedstown)
62 Savannah Sparrows
3 fish crow
8 great blue heron
6 m, 3 f Lesser Scaup (KG ponds)
640 tree swallows
20-25 rough-winged swallows
25-30 barn swallows
no bank swallows yet
47 cardinals
28 eastern bluebirds
12 osprey

1 common loon calling at KG ponds, none in
Potomac
