VA BIRDers,
A few notes on some No. VA birds seen this weekend.
2/24 Wood Ducks (7) in the creek next to the Occoquan Refuge, south side
2/23 Am Wigeon and Gadwall were mixed in with the Am. Coot flock on the south
end of the Dyke Marsh gut
2/24 No. Shoveler (3) in Powell's Creek at Leeslyvania SP Last time I saw
this species locally was the end of December
2/24 Red-breasted Merganser (3) on Burke Lake
2/23 A pair of Osprey on a channel marker post (number 3) on the west side of
Belmont Bay. I noted a single Osprey on this same post this afternoon (2/24)
as I viewed it from the new Belmont Bay Estates marina in Pr Wm Co.
2/23 Am Woodcock (6+) were displaying in the large field near Furnace Road in
Lorton just before sunrise. Easy to hear, tough to see from this location!
2/23 Lesser Black-backed Gull (2) at the Prince William Co. Dump. at about
1100
2/23 Iceland Gull (first winter) reported by "Doc" Larsen from Prince William
Co. Dump before 1000
2/23 Barn Owl flying perimeter of Am Woodcock field at Lorton before dawn.
Shrieky, raspy call is a bit unnerving the first time you hear it.
2/23 E. Phoebe at Lorton, near a creek with a bridge over it on Lorton Road
2/24 Am Tree Sparrows (3) near a brush pile at Occoquan Wildlife Refuge.
2/24 Fox Sparrows at Dyke Marsh in the woods along boat ramp road and in the
brush on the north west side of the Stone Bridge.
Also observed were Red-winged Blackbirds laying claim to territories (singing
from exposed perches) and single and small groups of Common Grackles flying
in several locations.
