Virginia Birders,
Fred Blystone and I birded the boardwalk over the swamp at Greensprings
Trail this morning between 7:30 and 9:30. For EBird purposes, this was a
"stationary" count. We did not walk the wooded trail or venture out to the
Mainland Farm. We camped out on the boardwalk, drank coffee, and made a
leisurely morning of it.
We only had 29 species, but they were "good" species. We may have missed
some because we kept getting distracted by the many Red-headed Woodpeckers
(over a dozen!), Wood Ducks (about a dozen immature), Green Herons (about
6), and Belted Kingfishers (about 4). One Osprey was still hanging out
there.
Not counted in the 29 species was a mysterious Flycatcher that we were
hesitant to identify as an Olive-sided Flycatcher. It had NO wing bars and
did not wag its tail. We ruled out lots of flycatchers, but could not
confirm our "guess." Also not in the count was a mysterious Sparrow we could
not get a good look at because of the sun in our eyes.
I submit the following for Bill Williams who sent me his sightings from
Greensprings Trail from Friday, September 8: "Prior to daybreak there were
33 flyover Veerys. A Dickcissel was seen and heard over Mainland farm. Also
there was a nice diversity of warblers along the trail including 1 each
Yellow Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, and
Yellow-breasted Chat, 2 Ovenbirds, and 5 American Redstarts. Really neat
were 2 Northern Bobwhites and a group of 11 Northern Mockingbirds!"
Note: If you plan to visit Greensprings Trail, you cannot make a round trip
around the entire trail. Construction has closed the west side of the trail
next to the housing development.
